The Musketeers (13-4, 3-2 Big East) on Monday will close out a gauntlet of three games in six days against Big East teams ranked in the Associated Press top 12. The Creighton University Bluejays (17-1, 4-1 Big East) visit Cintas Center for a scheduled 2 p.m. game.

As of Sunday, Xavier and Creighton were ranked No. 15 and No. 8, respectively.

For Xavier, the contest comes less than 48 hours after its road loss to the Butler Bulldogs. The game saw Xavier continue a pattern of succumbing to elite opponents at the outset of the second half.

It also saw the Musketeers punch back and nearly steal the game late, a response that showed signs of progress by Xavier.

“Butler really took it to us in the second half,” Xavier head coach Chris Mack said afterward. “I’m happy that we didn’t completely melt and cave like we did at Villanova, but there are some things to be unhappy about.”

Creighton on Saturday made quick work of Division II Truman State in an exhibition, and earlier in the week notched a convincing, 75-64 home win against Butler.

Senior guard Maurice Watson Jr., led Creighton against Butler with 21 points. Sophomore guard Khyri Thomas added 14 points. Observers widely agreed the Blue Jays’ win over the Bulldogs was not as close as the final score indicated.

At 17-1, Creighton is off to the best-ever start in the history of its program. Its lone loss came on New Years Eve against Villanova, and the margin was just 10 points.

Losses to quality opponents are starting to stack up for Xavier. The team is still seeking a signature win to solidify its NCAA Tournament resume. That’s something Mack will be increasingly aware of as the calendar turns to mid-January.

A victory against Creighton would satisfy several resume needs while a third straight loss to a Big East elite could see the Musketeers start to slide in the direction of the March Madness uncertainty, although there’s no imminent danger for Xavier’s tournament hopes.
